Small Guest Bedroom Idea

November 9, 2019 Allie Ellenbogen

Happy weekend, friends! This is our first free weekend since getting back from Tokyo and I’m so looking forward to dinner with friends, catching up on some sleep, doing a little reading, and tackling a couple things around the house.

Today I wanted to share an update of our guest room. This was one of the first spaces we got in working order because we wanted a place our friends and family could comfortably stay. It’s a pretty small room so we have a full bed, bedside tables, a desk, and a stool that can be used as a luggage rack. The room is both our guest room and office. But, honestly we don’t use it much as an office. You might remember this desk that we DIYed a while ago. It’s a perfect fit for the space, but since we haven’t used it as much as we anticipated  we may eventually swap it out for a dresser to give us a little more storage (something we can always use more of in this limited closet house). But for now it is nice to have a dedicated desk space when we need it.

We got a lot of bang for our buck in this guest room  because I ended up using a lot of things we already had. The only things I purchased were the headboard (part of a full bed that came from the West Elm outlet), the side tables (a great deal, the marble looks amazing!), and the standard shams (old from Anthro, similar styles here). Everything else was pulled from other parts of the house and I like the layered, eclectic look I ended up with. I added a couple pieces of art - a San Francisco print Xan gave to me many years ago and a London poster I picked up while we were there last year. Both of which I framed inexpensively.

Aside from the decor the things we did to get this room in working order were:

  • Adding the desk

  • Adapting the headboard to fit the bed

  • Replacing all the outlet/switch covers and receptacles

  • Adding blinds

I wouldn’t say this room is “finished,” but it’s finished for now. Eventually I’d like to:

  • Replace the fan

  • Update the closet doors (like this or this)

  • Fix the door (because of the sloping floors of our 100+ year old house it doesn’t quite close all the way. #character? EMOJI)

  • Add some kind of drapery (probably roman shades)

But, I’m plenty happy to live with it as is until I get around to those other wishlist items. I really love that when I’m coming up the stairs I get a little glimpse of the bed and the pillow combination - it always makes me smile.

Curtain Hanging: The Dos and Don’ts

Happy Thursday, friends! Today I’m sharing something that’s been a long time coming, and that’s our bedroom curtains. I actually ordered these SO LONG ago. We waited a while for them to be delivered, and then, after they arrived I went on what felt like a never-ending search for curtain rods. I bought several, returned some, bought different, went to so many stores, and finally found these. And, even after I finally had the rods and the curtains, it took a while to find the time to actually install them.

A Wall Mounted Bathroom Towel Hook Idea

Happy Monday, Friends! Today I have another update on our upstairs bathroom. It’s getting so close to being finished I can’t even wait! So, there was a little drama with these hooks before they even arrived. You see I accidentally ordered them to my old address. IN SAN FRANCISCO. After lots of phone calls and emails to friends in the city, a message to our old landlord, and an awesome customer service experience our old order was cancelled and refunded and we reordered the hooks to the correct address. Moral of the story? Anthropologie stores a default address for your online orders. Be sure that it’s the right one (it doesn’t matter if you’ve ordered things to your new address before, you know, say, the night before 🙈).

2017 One Room Challenge: Week 1

Hi there! Happy Thursday, friends. I’m so excited about today’s post because I’ve decided to participate in the One Room Challenge (!!!) as a guest blogger. If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge it’s a 6-week event where 20 or so bloggers choose a room and completely renovate it. Changes run the gamut from just decor updates to gut renovations. Every week they post updates of their progress and at the end of the 6-weeks there are all these beautiful, inspiring rooms to marvel at. And the best part is that anyone with a blog can participate as a guest – so that’s what I’m doing! Guest participants share weekly updates every Thursday, so this is the first in a series of 6 installments!

An Entryway Key Tray DIY Idea

Last month I showed you guys my foyer make over and you may remember the wooden bowl that I found at Target. I guess it’s more of a tray, really. Either way, I got it to catch our keys and sunglasses and other little things that need to be corralled by the door.

DIY Shibori Techniques

Hiya! I’m coming to you today with a DIY to take you into the weekend. Do you know what Shibori is? It’s a Japanese dyeing technique that produces really beautiful, organic designs. It’s like a step-up from that tie-dye you did at camp when you were a kid.
