Master Bathroom Makeover: DIY Bathroom Decor Ideas

November 27, 2017 Allie Ellenbogen

You guys have no idea how excited I am about this post. The upstairs bathroom design makeover is finally done and it’s been such a long time coming that I’m beyond thrilled to share the whole thing!!

Our upstairs bathroom also serves as the master bath. We have two bedrooms up there and one large bathroom. But because the second bedroom is a guest room and we have another full bath downstairs that’s more “public” it’s mostly us who uses this one. Which is great because it’s pretty large, and was renovated before we moved in.

If you’ve been following along you know that we’ve been doing a lot of work to get the bathroom to where it is now. At first glance from the before pictures it didn’t seem too bad. But, I pointed out a few things in the before and after section at the bottom that you really noticed once you were in the room. We had a friend over recently and she said “it finally looks cohesive, before it just looked weird.” Which is what didn’t always show up in the photos.

Master Bathroom Design Ideas: DIY and Budget Friendly

So, here’s a list of bathroom ideas that you could use for your space too! Everything was a DIY effort and were very budget friendly bathroom design ideas. It actually took completing all these projects to get the space where it is now.

-Installing a bathroom exhaust fan,
-Painting the whole room,
-Creating a claw foot tub shower curtain liner,
-Making a shower curtain for our claw foot tub shower combo,
-Adding toiletry storage for our claw foot tub shower combo,
-Getting a mirror,
-Adding the towel hooks,
-Installing outlet extenders,
-Rewiring the bathroom to add an outlet at the vanity and a three-switch plate,
-Organizing the drawers and cabinets, and
-Adding pulls to the drawers and cabinets.

With all those things done it’s seriously like a brand new place! I love that the tile, vanity, and hooks feel modern but the room still has some traditional elements like the heart pine floors, claw foot tub, and original door knob that are like a little nod to its 100 year-old farm house heritage. The rug is such a perfect pop of color and pattern. If I could be personified in a color palette I think that rug would be it. Plus it was an online exclusive that had been returned to our tiny, local Anthro in the right size and was on sale. Kismet if it ever was.

After using our teeny little downstairs shower for so long and constantly running up and down the stairs just to get ready I’m still happy every time I’m here. I’ve linked all the sources below. The tile was here when we moved in so I’m not sure exactly where they came from, but I included a link to something similar. The vanity looks like it’s made out of plywood and was probably done custom but on the cheap and I couldn’t find anything that really seemed similar.

I hope you love our master bathroom design as much as I do!

A Wall Mounted Bathroom Towel Hook Idea

Happy Monday, Friends! Today I have another update on our upstairs bathroom. It’s getting so close to being finished I can’t even wait! So, there was a little drama with these hooks before they even arrived. You see I accidentally ordered them to my old address. IN SAN FRANCISCO. After lots of phone calls and emails to friends in the city, a message to our old landlord, and an awesome customer service experience our old order was cancelled and refunded and we reordered the hooks to the correct address. Moral of the story? Anthropologie stores a default address for your online orders. Be sure that it’s the right one (it doesn’t matter if you’ve ordered things to your new address before, you know, say, the night before 🙈).

Small Bathroom Decor Idea

Happy Monday, friends! Today I’m sharing another e-design that I just love right now. It’s an idea for a powder bath or half bath. It’s so calming, pretty, chic, and eclectic. It all started with the wallpaper. I mean, it’s so pretty. The colors with the metallic gold accents. Phew, it doesn’t get much better than that. From there I added in some wood in the vanity and the stools. A little texture from the towels and the mirror. And pulled it together with some accents that aren’t too overwhelming. This is basically my dream small bathroom design.

We’re slowly inching closer to a finished upstairs bathroom. Even though we didn’t do any major renovations in there it’s still taking a while and the latest step in getting there was a fresh coat of paint. You may be thinking to yourself, “Allie, the bathroom doesn’t look like it needs to be painted?”

Why You Should Install Drawer Pulls ASAP!

On Friday I told you that one of my big goals for the upstairs bathroom was to get it set-up so we actually can start using it and get a little more shower space. One of the biggest obstacles has been the claw foot tub, but operation get-the-claw-foot-tub-shower-ready is well under way, so we’ve moved on to something else.

The house tour

Okay, guys, I’ve been dying to write this post. I’m SO excited about our new house and to share it with you. Before we moved in I went and snapped some pictures without anything in it. It’ll be pretty cool to do before and afters with that. Currently, we have everything in the house and out of the boxes, but it’s so far from photo-ready.
