Large Bathroom Mirror Idea

August 25, 2017 Allie Ellenbogen

I’m so excited because we FINALLY have a bathroom mirror. And it’s the perfect large DIY bathroom mirror. Yipppppeee! Ha, I know it sounds like a little thing, but there was so much that went into it.

Weirdly enough, there were no mirrors in the whole house when we moved in. Not even in the bathrooms. So settle in while I tell you a little story… Right before we closed on the house Target came out with this mirror that’s everywhere now because it’s super cute and an awesome price. As soon as I saw it I thought it would be perfect for our upstairs bathroom. I planned on getting two and putting one over each vanity and just knew it would be amazing! Well, when we got in and I measured it I found that they were too big. And that because of how close together the sinks are I actually wouldn’t be able to use two mirrors at all. “No problem” I thought to myself I have plenty of other bathroom mirror ideas. The first of which was to find one large mirror, that should be easy. Well, another snag in the plan came when I discovered that the biggest bathroom mirror I could seem to find was 40 inches wide. The vanity is over 80 inches long so I knew that a mirror that size would look really dinky. So then, the new idea was floor mirrors – those are much longer something like that should work if I turn it on its side, right? Well, most of those are pretty narrow and the ones that I found that were wide enough were almost $600 and insanely heavy. So, back to the drawing board.

The bathroom mirror DIY

After all this Xan decided to call a local glass distributor and find out how much it would cost to get a piece of glass cut in the size we needed. We didn’t try that to start with because figured it would be way more expensive. But we turned out to be totally wrong. A piece of mirror that was 75’’x34’’ (aka, huge!) was just a little over $100! That was it, we knew this was the way to go. It was sooo much cheaper than our other options and we could get exactly the size we needed. From there we just needed to figure out the mirror frame so we could mount it on the wall. Luckily we have a family friend who’s an incredibly talented woodworker and he offered to “help” make a frame. Help is in quotes there because he basically did all the work and Xan assisted. Haha. So, we ended up with this beautiful, handmade cypress frame in the perfect size. And I’m so unbelievably happy to be able to fully use the bathroom! I love that it’s above the part of the vanity without a sink because it’s so much easier to get ready there. And, now there’s enough room for 3 people, which is great because we don’t have a separate master bath. So, when visitors come we’re often sharing that bathroom and now there’s more space for everyone. Plus, up until now I’d been using a floor mirror in the bedroom and moving all my stuff back and forth to get ready. I hadn’t even had the chance to use the new outlet Xan installed above the vanity. As you can imagine I’m beyond excited to have it in. And look how pretty it is!

It was basically an extra long weekend and it was just what I needed. It included parties with friends, celebrations of babies, movie dates, and long naps. Perfection!

Curtain Hanging: The Dos and Don’ts

Happy Thursday, friends! Today I’m sharing something that’s been a long time coming, and that’s our bedroom curtains. I actually ordered these SO LONG ago. We waited a while for them to be delivered, and then, after they arrived I went on what felt like a never-ending search for curtain rods. I bought several, returned some, bought different, went to so many stores, and finally found these. And, even after I finally had the rods and the curtains, it took a while to find the time to actually install them.

A Wall Mounted Bathroom Towel Hook Idea

Happy Monday, Friends! Today I have another update on our upstairs bathroom. It’s getting so close to being finished I can’t even wait! So, there was a little drama with these hooks before they even arrived. You see I accidentally ordered them to my old address. IN SAN FRANCISCO. After lots of phone calls and emails to friends in the city, a message to our old landlord, and an awesome customer service experience our old order was cancelled and refunded and we reordered the hooks to the correct address. Moral of the story? Anthropologie stores a default address for your online orders. Be sure that it’s the right one (it doesn’t matter if you’ve ordered things to your new address before, you know, say, the night before 🙈).

Master Bathroom Paint Idea

We’re slowly inching closer to a finished upstairs bathroom. Even though we didn’t do any major renovations in there it’s still taking a while and the latest step in getting there was a fresh coat of paint. You may be thinking to yourself, “Allie, the bathroom doesn’t look like it needs to be painted?”

A DIY Foyer Table for Small Spaces

You might remember from a few posts back that I’ve been rearranging the furniture in our house. For me this is the final step before the fun stuff like hanging art, designing and just generally adding character and I’ve been pretty much dying to get to that since the day we set foot in this house.
