When you live in a walking city footwear matters a lot. But, I’ve never been one to sacrifice style for function. Up until now I’ve been running around the city in boots with a wooden sole, pointy-toed flats that’s squeeze my toes, or shoes that I know give me blisters – even after being broken in. Lately my feet have been pretty sore and I’ve decided it might be time to try and get on board with the tennis shoe trend.

A few weeks ago Xan and I felt like getting out in the city and trying something new. For a while we had been talking about trying one of the City Guides walking tours. They are free, guided tours around different areas of the city each with a specific theme. We’d heard great things about them and thought it might be a good way to learn a bit about the history of San Francisco and try something we’d never done.

I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again. Xan and I love our new apartment. We love it for countless reasons we’re discovering all the time. Another one we can add to the list is its proximity to the beach. Ocean Beach to be exact. It’s a quick and quiet train ride away and when you get there you truly feel like you’re in a little beach town. With delightfully sleepy shops, yoga studios, and eateries all around.

A couple months I became obsessed with Momofuku Milk Bar. I got the first cookbook and read it cover to cover. Her combinations and innovations are so cool. I think Christina Tosi is a genius. Though that is solely based on what I’ve seen and read. I have yet to actually go to a Milk Bar (crossing my fingers that a San Francisco location will be announced any day now). I’ve been wanting to make something from the book for a while now. But, most of the recipes seem pretty time consuming. And, almost every one has another recipe in it if not more. I needed to purchase a few key ingredients and utensils. Not to mention I’ve been trying to eat less added sugar and could hardly justify a whole batch of cookies for no reason. So I’ve been putting it off.

Dolores park hang.
My parents are here visiting (I’m beyond excited!) and it has me thinking about planning for visitors. Since moving to San Francisco we’ve become pretty darn good at hosting visitors. I think we’ve had more come through than if we lived closer to home but in a place with less travel appeal. It’s so much fun to have our friends and family come and see our home and life here. Plus, it’s like a stay-cation for us. We spend the whole time eating out and showing everyone our favorite spots in the city with some tourist stops mixed it. We’ve done it quite a few times now so I’ve pulled together some of the best tips I can think of for hosting out of town guests.

One place I love to shop, but have to show some restraint because I could drop a ton of money in the blink of an eye is Anthropologie. So one strategy I use is to shop the sales at the end of a season. This way I can grab a few new pieces for the next year and can spend way less money. As you start to see all those beautiful spring clothes roll in, you know it’s time to start keeping an eye on the fall/winter sales. So I’ve scoured several of my favorite stores for some items I’ve got my eye on. Links are below.
