Big Sur!

For Labor Day weekend we went down to Big Sur. Well, a little south actually. We stayed at a place called Tree Bones Resort. It’s a big property over-looking the Pacific Ocean dotted with little yurts. And let me tell you, it is ah-maz-ing. I could have stayed forever. We were there for the long weekend and we spent our time hiking, napping on the beach, soaking in sunsets from the hot tub, and eating some of the best sushi we’ve ever had.

Some parts of the area were closed because of the fire, but we still got to see a lot. If you take a weekend trip to Big Sur I highly recommend staying at Tree Bones. It’s about 45 minutes South of Big Sur proper, but it’s a lot more serene. It’s lacking the tourist hubbub that’s going on up in Big Sur. And, the property is really amazing. There’s no cell-phone service and very limited wifi access so you truly get to unplug. In fact, I hate to say it, but it was kind of hard at first. I hate that I’m that connected to my phone and technology. But, once I adjusted it was great.

There are two restaurants on the property, but we only ate at the sushi place. It was so good that we went both nights. It’s this tiny little sushi bar that seats about 10 people. The chef there did a phenomenal job. The sushi was so creative and simple at the same time. Xan and I both agree it’s the best sushi we’ve ever had.

Beyond the eating the property is stunning. The whole thing is set against a beautiful mountain range overlooking the Pacific. With a huge organic garden, plenty of room for exploring, and nooks perfect for relaxing all over it’s truly a paradise. If you go, here are some recommendations.

1. Take your time. Drive down the one and do it slowly. Stop all along the way and take in the views. Really, you can’t do enough of it. It would be a shame to rush through it.

2. Skip most of the Big Sur restaurants. Yup, even Big Sur Bakery. Maybe it’s better for pastries, but lunch was a disappointment. The food was less than mediocre and service was crummy. Do stop by Nepenthe but, instead of going to the main restaurant enjoy a couple drinks from the lower deck. If the sun is shining you won’t regret it.

3. Get out in nature! Take advantage of the hikes and walks everywhere. Our favorites were the Limekiln Park and beach and McWay Falls. Seriously, how is the water so blue?? It’s so beautiful.
