Southern California: San Diego and La Jolla

As I mentioned in my last post, on our vacation with Xan’s family we stayed in Temecula, but took a couple day trips to other places. One of them was San Diego and La Jolla. I really enjoyed them both!

We’d made reservations for a sea kayaking and snorkeling tour in La Jolla. But, that was in the afternoon so we had a few hours to kill. We decided to get a small taste of San Diego by visiting Balboa park and doing a guided ranger tour. The tour was only okay, the park itself, however, was so cool! It’s 1,400 square miles (larger than Central Park), has 17 different museums in it, and has tons of recreation space. It’s in this beautiful Mediterranean style with gorgeous plants and buildings all around. And, most of the museums look really interesting. I could definitely could have spent days there.

After our quick jaunt in San Diego we headed over to La Jolla for lunch before the kayaking. We stopped at The Taco Stand and it was so good! Seriously, if you’re ever in La Jolla it’s a must eat. Xan’s favorite was the crispy fish taco (he said “it’s the crispiest fish I’ve ever had!” and he eats a lot of fish tacos). I had the shrimp burrito, which I would absolutely order again.

After lunch we headed over to get ready for the kayak tour. The shop was a couple blocks from La Jolla shores. Once we were suited up we walked down to the beach where we kayaked from the shore to the cove, did some snorkeling, and then kayaked back in. The current was strong so it took a lot of work, but felt really good when we were done. Plus, we saw some cool wildlife and had nice views along the way. And, I even got air born as we were kayaking through the break!

After kayaking we went for beers and guacamole at an adorable beach bar – the design was on point! Before heading back to Temecula we stopped off the beach side of the cove and got up close with some sea lions and took in some more beautiful views.

It was a great day trip and I can’t wait to go back!
